A 75-year old man was killed, and another man was injured in an apartment fire in the Manayunk section over the weekend. A report from 6 ABC Action News said, the fire broke out at around 11:15 p.m. on Sunday night. The fire was coming from a 3rd-floor apartment on the 100 block of Surmac Street.

Officials from the Philadelphia Fire Department said, the lack of any functioning smoke alarms played a role in the fire turning into a tragedy that left a person dead.
Call 311 for smoke alarms. Always have an escape plan. All the things we have been preaching. The Fire Commissioner has talked about us having a fire problem in the city, and we continue to have that”, Philadelphia Fire Captain, Derek Bomer said.
Fire crews said they had to fight their way through massive amounts of items in the apartment of the victim, who firefighters said may have been a “hoarder.” Firefighter found the 75-year old man dead on the third floor of the apartment. The second victim was rushed to Temple University Hospital for treatment of burns. No word on their present condition has been released at this time.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
