Three NYPD Officers were injured by a man wielding a machete in Times Square as spectators awaited the start of 2023 on New Year’s Eve night.

A 6 ABC report said the unprovoked machete attack happened at West 52nd Street & 8th Avenue at around 10 p.m. on Saturday night.
The incident began outside of a Time’s Square New Years Eve security screening zone. That was where the unidentified 19-year old suspect reportedly attempted to strike an officer over the head with the machete. The suspect reportedly struck two more officers with the weapon, before one of the officers pulled out his pistol and shot the suspect in the shoulder.
The injured officers and suspect were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
The 1st officer, who is reported to be a recent graduate of the Police Academy, suffered a skull fracture and a large laceration to his head. The 2nd officer, reported to be an 8-year veteran, suffered a laceration. The injuries to the 3rd injured officer were not reported. All three of the officers were last reported to be in stable condition.
The suspect was apprehended after being shot, but there was no word on his current condition.
