A 15-year old student at Simon Gratz High School Mastery Charter, was shot and killed just a few blocks away from the school this morning in the Nicetown-Tioga section of the city.
A 6 ABC Action News report said the shooting happened near 16th Street & Hunting Park Avenue at around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
The student was reportedly walking to school when he was jumped by three males wearing masks and dressed in all black clothing. According to witnesses at the scene, the victim fought with the three assailants, before one of them pulled out a gun and shot him in the chest.
“At some point, one of them produced a handgun and shot him at least one time in the chest”, said Sgt. Eric Gripp with the Philadelphia Police Department.
The group reportedly fled the scene on foot after the shooting. The student was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. A possible motive for the attack and killing was not reported.
No suspects have been named and no arrests have been made at this time.
